University Advice: Choosing a University and Course

Understanding where you’d like to study, which course you’d like to take and how that might impact on your future career is a complex task. A consultation with one of our University Advisers will provide you with the information you need to start putting together your list and thinking about the next stage of the process – the application.

Personal Statement Support

Once you have chosen which universities you’d like to apply for, you will then need to complete the UCAS application process and ensure your personal statement really shines. The personal statement is your chance to show each university who you are, the achievements you have made and why you would be a good fit for the course and their institution. We’ve supported hundreds of students through this process and understand what makes a good personal statement stand out from the crowd.

Interview Practice

This is your chance to sit down with a world expert and discuss the subject you love. Your interviewer will be looking for someone with passion for their subject and who has read beyond the school curriculum. Nine Elms Service is on hand to hone your skills for the crucial stage of the application process. We will provide you with an expert tutor who has experience in interview preparation specific to the course you are applying for. The one to one sessions are designed to build your confidence and knowledge required to impress at your university interview.

If you are moving to the UK and need to improve your English, we can do one on one lessons to help you improve.

GCSE and A Level

The volume of subjects examined at GCSE and the detailed knowledge required at A Level can prove overwhelming without the right guidance. We will provide GCSE and A-Level Tutors who:

• • have detailed, expert knowledge about the syllabus and requirements of the exam board that your child is studying;

How it works:

Consultation

Before we can help a student, we often need to spend quite a significant amount of time learning about the student's requirements. Most consultations are carried out over the phone, though some are done in person at our office. Via our detailed consultations, we make sure that the objectives of each tutoring placement are well established from the outset. We offer a free consultation for all students. 

​

If it is deemed necessary, we often arrange for students to be academically assessed. The assessor helps the University Student or parents set realistic goals for the tutoring, and passes a thorough report to both the tutor and parent detailing areas requiring attention.

Nine Elms Service has a comprehensive knowledge of the UK education system, from primary schools through to Universities. Indeed, many of Nine Elms Service tutors and consultants are current or ex Professors or Teachers.

Tutor Selection

The selection of the tutor is an integral part of our process. Priding ourselves on how well we know the varying strengths of each tutor, we ensure that each decision is informed by the expectation of a successful match between the tutor and student. Nine Elms Service do rigorous tutor selection procedure and we look to ensure that we put forward the very best candidate for each role.

Monitoring and Feedback

We make contact with the student after the first lesson to find out how the lesson went, and to see whether the stated objectives are realistic or need adjusting.

Tutors submit a monthly report detailing:

• the focus of that month’s tutoring

• the form of assessment used

• the student's achievements and areas for further work

• the focus for the coming month
